Triangle-With-Two-Arrows Icon on Android Signals Data Saver

The indicator marks Android’s Data Saver, a setting that restricts background data to save bandwidth at the cost of timely app updates.

Overview

  • The triangle symbol appears on many Android phones, including Samsung, Xiaomi and Google devices, and it is shown only when Data Saver is enabled.
  • Data Saver limits background connections, which can delay or stop notifications, pause cloud sync, disable mobile hotspot, reduce image quality and prevent auto‑play in videos.
  • On Samsung phones you can toggle it under Settings > Connections > Data usage > Data Saver, while on other Android devices it sits in Network settings under Data Saver.
  • Users can whitelist selected apps to always use data, and they can hide the status icon without disabling the feature.
  • Since Android 8.0 Oreo the icon moved from a plus-in-a-circle to the triangle with two arrows, and the Data Saver menu may be inaccessible without a SIM or mobile connection.
