Trial Underway for Paramedics Charged in Elijah McClain's Death
Prosecutors allege the paramedics administered a lethal dose of ketamine without following protocols.
- Paramedics Jeremy Cooper and Peter Cichuniec are on trial for the death of Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old Black man who died in 2019 after an encounter with police in Aurora, Colorado.
- The paramedics are accused of injecting McClain with an overdose of ketamine without following their training and protocols.
- Cooper and Cichuniec are charged with criminally negligent homicide, second-degree assault and crimes of violence. Cichuniec is also facing an additional charge of manslaughter.
- Prosecutors argue that the paramedics overestimated McClain's weight, leading to the overdose. They also claim that McClain, who was handcuffed and restrained by multiple officers, did not pose a threat to anyone.
- This trial is the last set of criminal charges to be tried in connection with McClain's death. One officer has been convicted of criminally negligent homicide and second-degree assault, while two others were acquitted.
