Overview

  • CCTV footage shown at Carlisle Crown Court captured the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Luton van colliding with the rear of a Volkswagen Passat on February 28, 2022.
  • The Passat had slowed to crawling speed or come to a complete stop in lane two of the M6 with its hazard lights activated under a 70 mph speed limit.
  • Luke Price was driving at 67 mph and was 236 metres behind the Passat when he failed to brake or change lanes before impact.
  • The collision ruptured the Passat’s fuel tank, igniting a fire that killed driver Florentin Lepadat and passenger Viorel Stroe while front-seat passenger Marian Lepadat survived with injuries.
  • Price denies causing the deaths by careless driving and contends he had no time to react, and his defense will present its case next in the ongoing trial.
