Trial for Theft of Ancient Celtic Gold Treasure Set to Begin in January

The 2,100-year-old gold coins, valued at over €1.5 million, were stolen from a Bavarian museum in a high-profile 2022 heist.

  • The trial will commence on January 21, 2025, at the Ingolstadt Regional Court and is scheduled to span 32 hearing days until June 5.
  • The stolen treasure, a collection of 450 Celtic gold coins, is considered the largest Celtic gold find of the 20th century and is of immense historical and scientific value.
  • The theft occurred in November 2022 at the Celtic-Roman Museum in Manching, Bavaria, where the treasure was a centerpiece exhibit.
  • Four suspects, aged 43 to 51, were arrested in July 2023 and face charges of organized theft; they have remained silent on the allegations.
  • The accused are also linked to other burglaries targeting cash machines and safes across Germany since 2014.
