Trial Begins for Alleged Left-Wing Extremists Accused of 1995 Berlin Bomb Plot
Two men face charges nearly 30 years after allegedly planning to bomb a Berlin deportation facility under construction.
- The trial of Peter K. (65) and Thomas W. (62), alleged members of the left-wing extremist group 'Das Komitee,' begins at the Berlin Kammergericht.
- The pair are accused of planning a 1995 bombing targeting a deportation facility being constructed in Berlin-Grünau to prevent the deportation of Kurdish individuals.
- Authorities allege the men prepared over 120 kilograms of explosives in propane gas cylinders with timed detonators, but the plot was disrupted by police before execution.
- After evading authorities for nearly 30 years in Venezuela, the men returned to Germany last week and were arrested at Berlin Brandenburg Airport.
- The trial is expected to span four sessions, with a potential verdict anticipated on April 8, 2025.
