Trial Begins for 2020 Nice Basilica Terror Attack Suspect

Brahim Aouissaoui, accused of killing three people in a knife attack, faces charges of terrorism-related murder and attempted murder in a Paris court.

The trial of Brahim Aouissaoui, a 25-year-old Tunisian, opened on February 10, 2025, in Paris for the 2020 knife attack at the Nice basilica that left three dead.
The attack, which occurred on October 29, 2020, involved the near-decapitation of one victim, the stabbing of another with 24 knife wounds, and the fatal assault of the basilica's sacristan.
Prosecutors allege the attack was premeditated, citing Aouissaoui's radicalization, prior surveillance of the basilica, and evidence from his phone and social media activity.
Aouissaoui claims to have no memory of the attack, but medical and psychiatric evaluations have dismissed his claims of amnesia as unfounded.
The trial, expected to last until February 26, will also examine the mental state of the accused after four years of solitary confinement and his capacity to participate in his defense.
