Travellers Spot Camouflaged Saltwater Crocodile in Remote WA Waterhole

The sighting has prompted renewed 'Be Crocwise' reminders that saltwater crocodiles inhabit fresh water far inland across the Kimberley.

Overview

  • Jackson Coffey, 29, and his partner Steph found the crocodile just before a planned swim after hiking to view Aboriginal rock art in Western Australia’s northwest.
  • The couple’s footage posted to YouTube and Facebook shows the reptile lying among rocks only metres below the surface of a high escarpment pool.
  • Coffey noted the pool was a fair way above sea level and likely required the animal to climb in, highlighting how easily crocodiles can be overlooked.
  • WA’s Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions reiterated that saltwater crocodiles thrive in both salt and fresh water and can be found hundreds of kilometres inland.
  • Officials advise assuming Kimberley waterways contain dangerous crocodiles and avoiding swimming, with a March Drysdale River rescue cited as a recent cautionary example.
