Travellers Face £5,000 Penalties for Bringing Meat and Dairy Into Great Britain

The restrictions apply to all travellers from EU countries to protect British livestock after European foot-and-mouth outbreaks

Overview

  • Holidaymakers caught carrying sandwiches, cheese, cured meats, raw meats or milk face fines up to £5,000 under new biosecurity rules
  • Banned items must be surrendered at the border or will be seized and destroyed regardless of packaging or duty-free origin
  • The measures cover personal imports into Great Britain only and do not apply to arrivals from Northern Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man Exemptions allow small quantities of baby formula, medicinal foods and certain composite products such as chocolate, sweets, bread, cakes, biscuits and pasta
  • The UK Government introduced the crackdown in April following outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in Germany, Hungary, Slovakia and Austria
