Transport Canada Orders Removal of Abandoned Tidal Power Moorings Near Walton, N.S.

The moorings, left by bankrupt Occurrent Power, pose a navigational hazard in the Bay of Fundy.

  • Transport Canada has directed a bankrupt tidal power company, Occurrent Power, and its bankruptcy trustee to devise a plan for removing four large moorings abandoned near Walton, N.S.
  • The moorings consist of concrete-filled railcars connected by giant chains, initially intended for a tidal power project before the company declared bankruptcy on August 29.
  • The abandoned railcars, located just beneath the surface during high tide, have been formally identified as a navigational hazard to boaters.
  • The provincial Department of Natural Resources has indicated that the company's $20,000 project deposit will be used to help cover removal costs.
  • The final cost of removal will be determined by the government agency tasked with the operation, which will then seek to recover these costs through bankruptcy proceedings.
