Transpennine Upgrade Drives New Year Service Changes Across Northern England

Network Rail is replacing signalling between Leeds and Church Fenton with 54 new signals and a new power supply to boost reliability.

Overview

  • Engineering work running from December 27 to January 25 brings amended timetables, diversions and rail‑replacement buses, particularly on the LeedsYork/Selby route via Micklefield.
  • Northern urges passengers to check before they travel, with most New Year’s Eve services following weekday schedules but finishing around 9pm.
  • On New Year’s Day, trains start later and then follow Thursday timetables except in the North East, where only the Whitby special services will operate.
  • Two limited-stop New Year’s Day trains in each direction will run between Darlington, Middlesbrough and Whitby, supported by community and council partners.
  • Network Rail warns replacement vehicles may be busier than usual and to allow extra journey time, with CrossCountry and TransPennine Express services also affected by the works.
