Transgender Health Care Restrictions Expand in 2024

Republican-led legislatures target adults as well as youths in new round of bills, despite opposition from major medical groups.

Republican-led state legislatures are considering a new round of bills restricting medical care for transgender youths and adults, building on previous restrictions.
At least 22 states have enacted bans on gender-affirming care for children, with most of them approved in the past year.
Major medical groups, including the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics, oppose the bans and endorse such care, stating it's safe when administered properly.
In Ohio, House Republicans voted to override a veto of legislation banning all forms of gender-affirming care for minors, with the Senate expected to follow suit.
Nationwide, challenges to laws already in place are moving closer to the U.S. Supreme Court, with the American Civil Liberties Union asking the court to block restrictions on care for youths in Kentucky and Tennessee.
