Transgender Day of Remembrance: Honoring Lives Lost and Advocating for Equality

As the world commemorates TDOR, notable figures share personal remembrances and the fight against anti-transgender violence and workplace discrimination continues.

  • Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is observed annually on Nov. 20 to honor the memory of transgender individuals who have lost their lives to anti-transgender violence. The day was founded in 1999 by advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith.
  • Several notable transgender artists and performers shared their personal remembrances and the individuals they'll be thinking of on TDOR, including Amanda Milan, Brandon Teena, and Muhlaysia Booker.
  • According to the Human Rights Campaign, at least 33 transgender and gender-nonconforming people in the U.S. have been killed in the last twelve months. In 2022, a total of 41 trans people died from violence.
  • Workplace discrimination remains a significant issue for transgender individuals, with transgender women earning about 60 cents on the dollar compared to cisgender and straight colleagues. Only 35% of LGBTQ+ professionals feel safe bringing their full selves to work.
  • Experts recommend several ways to support transgender professionals in the workplace, including taking a stand against inappropriate comments, educating oneself with inclusion and anti-bias training, and reporting any discrimination to HR.
