Overview

  • Around 2 pm on Sunday a Piper PA-28-140 Cherokee on a Shellharbour-to-Wollongong training flight lost engine power and made an emergency landing on the 15th fairway at Mona Vale Golf Club.
  • Both the instructor and trainee pilot, men in their 50s, self-extricated with minor abrasions and were treated by paramedics before being taken in stable condition to Royal North Shore Hospital; they have since been released.
  • Aerial and eyewitness footage show the aircraft largely intact but with visible wing damage and detached landing gear, and no bystanders were harmed despite a busy course.
  • Flight-tracker records indicate the plane departed Shellharbour, stopped in Camden, then continued north before experiencing the power loss that forced the landing.
  • The ATSB has been notified and is interviewing participants and witnesses while collecting ADS-B tracking data, video and maintenance logs to decide if a formal investigation will follow.
