Trainer Uses AED to Revive 7th-Grade Player at Trinity High School Game

Trainers credit a rehearsed cardiac response plan with on-site AEDs, now mandated in Texas, for the swift save.

Overview

  • A Haltom Middle School player collapsed while coming off the field late Monday during a middle school game at Trinity High School in Euless.
  • A Texas Health athletic trainer summoned Trinity assistant athletic trainer Saad Rajabali, who applied an AED, delivered a shock, and performed compressions until breathing returned.
  • Districts report the student was awake and talking en route to the hospital and is now alert, stable, and undergoing tests at Cook Children’s.
  • HEB ISD leaders say a Cardiac Emergency Response Plan developed with the American Heart Association and regular practice enabled the coordinated response.
  • Texas this year required all districts to implement cardiac emergency plans and provide CPR/AED training for students in grades 7–12.
