Train Hits Double-Decker Bus in Atlacomulco, Leaving At Least 10 Dead

Authorities are probing whether the Herradura de Plata driver ignored rail-crossing signals as teams secure the site and continue forensic work.

Overview

  • The collision occurred around 7 a.m. on the Atlacomulco–Maravatío highway near the El OroSan Felipe del Progreso interchange, according to officials.
  • State civil protection later revised the toll to 10 dead and 41 injured after initial reports of eight dead and 45 injured.
  • Surveillance video shows the bus entering the tracks as a CPKC freight train approached, and witnesses say traffic prevented it from clearing the crossing.
  • The double-decker coach was carrying about 50 passengers on a route from San Felipe del Progreso and El Oro toward Mexico City, leaving the upper level heavily damaged.
  • Protección Civil, SUEM, Cruz Roja, the State Police, the National Guard and the Fiscalía responded, closed the roadway and transferred victims to regional hospitals, and CPKC said it is cooperating with the investigation.
