TRAI Reports 21 Lakh Spam Numbers Cut Off, Urges Users to File Complaints via DND App

The regulator says DND app reports let operators trace sources to permanently disconnect offenders.

Overview

  • Over the past year, more than 21 lakh mobile numbers were disconnected and about one lakh entities were blacklisted for spam and fraud, according to the Ministry of Communications.
  • TRAI stressed that blocking a number on a phone only hides it locally and does not stop scammers from targeting others with new numbers.
  • Citizen complaints lodged through the TRAI DND app enabled tracing, verification, and permanent disconnection of numbers used for unsolicited or fraudulent communication.
  • The advisory urges users to download the official TRAI DND app, avoid sharing personal or banking details, and promptly report suspicious calls or messages.
  • People are directed to report cyber fraud to the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in and to flag telecom misuse via Sanchar Saathi’s Chakshu feature, with special outreach to seniors, women, and new digital users.
