TRAI Opens Consultation on Auctioning 11,500 MHz Across 10 Bands with Comments Due Oct. 28

The review follows a government request after a weak 2024 sale to recalibrate auction design.

Overview

  • TRAI’s paper invites views on reserve prices, band plans, block sizes and auction conditions for IMT spectrum spanning 800, 900, 1800, 2100, 2300, 2500, 3300 and 26 GHz.
  • The consultation seeks input on the contested 6 GHz band, with 500 MHz in the lower portion already cleared for licence‑exempt low‑power use and 400 MHz in the upper portion under consideration for auction.
  • DoT has asked TRAI to re-examine the 600 MHz band and to provide fresh recommendations on 30 MHz unsold in 700 MHz and 67 MHz in the 1427–1518 MHz range.
  • Stakeholders must file comments by October 28 and counter-comments by November 11.
  • TRAI has been asked to assess auction timing for 6425–6725 MHz and 7025–7125 MHz given ecosystem readiness, and to plan re-farming of 687 MHz for IMT following tepid demand in the June 2024 sale.
