An 18-wheel tractor-trailer carrying compressed natural gas crashed into a railroad bridge in Glenville, New York, causing a massive explosion and fire that reached up to 200 feet into the sky.
The driver, Sylvester Basil, 60, from Texas, suffered severe burns to his hands and face and was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center.
A train was passing over the bridge at the time of the explosion, but remarkably did not sustain any damage.
The explosion knocked out power for most residents and businesses on the east side of town, and nearby homes were evacuated.
The bridge has been the site of multiple collisions in the past year, sparking discussions about the need for safety improvements.
