Toyota Unveils Ninth-Generation HiLux With First Battery-Electric Variant

Early BEV figures signal reduced towing plus shorter range compared with the diesel.

Overview

  • Toyota revealed the new HiLux in Bangkok, confirming a multi-pathway lineup that adds a BEV now and a hydrogen fuel-cell model from 2028 alongside carryover diesel power.
  • An Australian-led exterior redesign and a revamped cabin with up to 12.3-inch digital displays sit on the existing IMV ladder frame with much of the cab structure carried over.
  • At launch the HiLux uses the 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV turbo-diesel with six-speed auto or manual, with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance standard on some automatic grades.
  • BEV specs include a 59.2 kWh lithium-ion battery under the floor, front and rear eAxles for AWD and about 144 kW output, with pre-homologation targets of 240 km WLTP range (300+ km NEDC target in Australia), 715 kg payload and 1,600 kg braked towing.
  • Australia’s rollout is staged: diesel models arrive in December 2025, the BEV follows in the first quarter of 2026 and the FCEV is slated for 2028, with Toyota positioning the BEV chiefly for fleets and urban trade users.
