Toyota Unveils Ninth-Generation HiLux, Confirms BEV and FCEV Rollout

The reveal confirms a diesel-first approach followed by electric options on a long-planned timetable.

Overview

  • Toyota took the wraps off the new HiLux in Bangkok, with Australian diesel models due in showrooms from December 2025 across single-, extra- and dual-cab bodies and WorkMate, SR, SR5, Rogue and Rugged X grades.
  • At launch the only engine is the carried-over 2.8‑litre 1GD‑FTV turbo‑diesel, offered with six-speed manual or automatic transmissions and 48‑volt mild‑hybrid tech on select automatic grades.
  • A HiLux BEV is confirmed for Australia in the first quarter of 2026, featuring a 59.2 kWh battery, more than 300 km range and 144 kW four‑wheel‑drive eAxles, with Toyota targeting fleets and urban trade users.
  • A hydrogen fuel‑cell HiLux will follow in 2028 for Europe and Oceania, with Toyota Australia indicating public availability locally.
  • The model retains its IMV ladder‑frame platform but debuts an Australian‑led exterior design and a significantly upgraded cabin with a 12.3‑inch infotainment screen, digital instruments, new seats and added off‑road and driver‑assist tech.
