Toyota Unveils Ninth-Generation Hilux, Adding First EV and Setting 2025 Rollout

The update pairs a debut battery-electric option with the long-running IMV ladder frame to serve varied markets at controlled cost.

Overview

  • Toyota revealed the new Hilux in Bangkok and said sales in key markets will begin from December 2025, with the battery-electric version arriving first.
  • The Hilux BEV uses a 59.2 kWh battery and dual e-axles for permanent AWD, targeting about 240 km WLTP range, roughly 715 kg payload and around 1,600 kg towing, with off-road capability matching the diesel’s wading depth.
  • Production of the 48V mild-hybrid diesel starts in spring 2026, internal-combustion options continue in select regions, and a hydrogen fuel-cell Hilux is confirmed for 2028.
  • At launch in many markets the carried-over 2.8-litre turbo-diesel remains the primary engine, with outputs unchanged and manual or automatic transmissions offered by market.
  • Toyota Design Australia led the exterior redesign, while the cabin adds up to dual 12.3-inch displays, electric power steering, expanded Toyota T‑Mate safety features and OTA updates, all atop the retained IMV ladder-frame architecture.
