Toyota to Run Liquid‑Hydrogen Prototype for First Public Laps at Le Mans
The demonstration will give on‑track validation of Toyota’s liquid‑hydrogen combustion work for a possible competitive Le Mans entry.
Overview
- The TR LH2 Racing Prototype will complete public demonstration laps on Thursday June 11 and Saturday June 13, 2026 with Toyota Racing vice‑chairman Kazuki Nakajima at the wheel.
- When not on track the car will be displayed in Le Mans’ Hydrogen Village alongside a fully functional TotalEnergies liquid‑hydrogen refuelling station to show fuel and pit logistics.
- Reports say the TR LH2 is based on the TR010 Hypercar chassis, continuing Toyota’s step‑by‑step development of hydrogen internal‑combustion engines that began in Super Taikyu in 2021.
- The Automobile Club de l’Ouest has set 2028 as a target for hydrogen cars to race at Le Mans but both the ACO and Toyota say a Garage 56 one‑off entry is the most likely initial route and the date could slip later.
- The public runs will let engineers test engine performance, fuel storage and cooling systems under race conditions and give regulators and fans a close look at the safety and operational issues that will determine whether hydrogen moves from demonstration to full competition.
