Toyota Recalls over 750,000 Highlanders Due to Potential Hazard from Faulty Bumper Tabs

Recall impacts Highlanders from 2020 to 2023 and hybrid versions, due to concerns that even a minor impact could cause bumper parts to detach and pose road hazards; notifications to vehicle owners and inspection of bumper tabs by dealers to initiate by late December.

  • Toyota is recalling more than 750,000 of its Highlander vehicles produced between 2020 and 2023, including the hybrid versions, due to potential hazards linked to faulty tabs securing the front bumper.
  • The recall concerns stem from the risk that minor impacts could cause the tabs securing the Highlander's resin front lower bumper covers to detach, potentially leading to parts falling onto the road and creating a hazard.
  • If no damage is found during inspections by dealers, improved hardware will be installed to hold the covers securely. In cases with detected damage, dealers will replace the bumper covers and install the upgraded hardware.
  • Toyota plans to start notifying affected vehicle owners by late December. In the meantime, owners can also verify if their car is included in the recall by checking at nhtsa.gov/recalls with their vehicle information.
  • The recall also covers approximately 751,000 Highlanders in the United States, but it is also expected to impact other global markets. Toyota is now supplying improved mounting clips and screw fasteners worldwide.
