Toyota Recalls Nearly 2 Million RAV4s Over Fire Risk from Battery Issue

Potential fire emanates from inappropriate installation of replacement batteries in models from 2013 to 2018, fix under development with customer notifications expected by late December.

  • Toyota is recalling 1.85 million RAV4 sport utility vehicles in the United States due to fire risks associated with the incorrect installation of replacement batteries.
  • The issue lies with some replacement 12-volt batteries having smaller top dimensions. If not fastened correctly with a hold-down clamp, the battery may shift during forceful turns, potentially causing a short circuit and inciting a fire.
  • The recall covers RAV4 vehicles from the 2013 to 2018 model years. It does not affect hybrid or plug-in hybrid models from the same years.
  • Toyota is currently developing a solution to the problem. Once available, dealers will replace the faulty battery hold-down clamp, battery tray, and positive terminal cover with improved versions at no cost to vehicle owners.
  • Current owners of the affected RAV4 models can expect to be notified about the recall and the forthcoming remedy by late December 2023.
  • Customers can check if their vehicles are affected by the recall by visiting Toyota's website or the agency's website and entering their vehicle's identification number or license plate information.
