Overview
- Toyota is recalling 1.85 million RAV4 sport utility vehicles in the United States due to fire risks associated with the incorrect installation of replacement batteries.
- The issue lies with some replacement 12-volt batteries having smaller top dimensions. If not fastened correctly with a hold-down clamp, the battery may shift during forceful turns, potentially causing a short circuit and inciting a fire.
- The recall covers RAV4 vehicles from the 2013 to 2018 model years. It does not affect hybrid or plug-in hybrid models from the same years.
- Toyota is currently developing a solution to the problem. Once available, dealers will replace the faulty battery hold-down clamp, battery tray, and positive terminal cover with improved versions at no cost to vehicle owners.
- Current owners of the affected RAV4 models can expect to be notified about the recall and the forthcoming remedy by late December 2023.
- Customers can check if their vehicles are affected by the recall by visiting Toyota's website or the agency's website and entering their vehicle's identification number or license plate information.
