Toyota Recalls 751,000 Highlanders Due to Risk of Bumper Covers Falling Off

The recall, affecting the 2020 to 2023 model years including hybrids, is due to mounting tabs that could detach after even minor impacts, causing hazardous road debris; dealers to inspect and repair potentially affected units.

  • Toyota has announced a recall of approximately 751,000 models of the Toyota Highlander, spanning the 2020 to 2023 model years, including gas-electric hybrids.
  • The problem originates from the resin front lower bumper covers, which are related to mounting tabs. A minor impact could lead to these tabs detaching and falling onto the road, creating a driving hazard.
  • Dealers are directed to inspect the bumper cover tabs for any damage. If there is no damage found, they will install upgraded hardware to hold the covers in place.
  • In the case where damage is detected, the dealers will replace the affected upper and/or lower bumper covers and implement the improved hardware.
  • Toyota will begin notifying owners about the recall by late December. Vehicle owners can also independently verify if their Highlander is included in the recall by visiting nhtsa.gov/recalls and entering their vehicle identification or license plate numbers.
