Toyota Partners with Redwood Materials to Recycle and Reuse Old Prius Batteries

The initiative marks a first in the auto industry, with the recycled materials to be used in future electrified and all-electric vehicles.

  • Toyota has partnered with Redwood Materials to recycle old Prius batteries into new ones for hybrid and electric cars, marking the first time an automaker is recycling and reusing its own batteries.
  • Redwood Materials aims to provide at least 20% recycled nickel, 20% recycled lithium, 50% recycled cobalt, and 100% recycled copper in new batteries' cathodes and anode copper foils.
  • The first Prius, released in 2003, is nearing the end of its life cycle, and Redwood Materials will be recycling batteries from a fleet sent from California to its facility in Nevada.
  • Redwood Materials, founded by Tesla co-founder JB Straubel, is also expanding its facilities in Nevada and South Carolina, aiming to scale production of components to 100 GWh annually.
  • Toyota's CEO Akio Toyoda has been skeptical about electric vehicles being the only solution for carbon neutrality, and has stated that the company will sell a variety of vehicles.
