Toyota Partners with Cirba Solutions to Boost Battery Recycling
The collaboration aims to increase the recycling of end-of-life lithium-ion batteries, reduce costs, and lower Toyota's operational carbon footprint.
- Toyota Motor North America is partnering with Cirba Solutions to expand its battery recycling network.
- The collaboration will focus on the collection, transportation, dismantling, and processing of end-of-life lithium-ion electrified vehicle batteries from the Midwest and East Coast regions.
- Processing will take place at Cirba Solutions’ Lancaster, Ohio facility, which uses advanced technology to extract critical minerals from scrap and end-of-life batteries with a recovery rate of up to 95%.
- Toyota currently collects approximately 25,000 used automotive batteries annually, mostly nickel-metal hydride batteries found in its hybrid electric vehicles, and expects this number to rise with the increase in sales of battery electric vehicles.
- Through the agreement with Cirba Solutions, Toyota anticipates reducing its overall transportation and logistics costs by at least 70% by reducing the average miles driven for collection and recycling.
