Toyota Partners with Cirba Solutions to Boost Battery Recycling

The collaboration aims to increase the recycling of end-of-life lithium-ion batteries, reduce costs, and lower Toyota's operational carbon footprint.

Toyota Motor North America is partnering with Cirba Solutions to expand its battery recycling network.
The collaboration will focus on the collection, transportation, dismantling, and processing of end-of-life lithium-ion electrified vehicle batteries from the Midwest and East Coast regions.
Processing will take place at Cirba Solutions’ Lancaster, Ohio facility, which uses advanced technology to extract critical minerals from scrap and end-of-life batteries with a recovery rate of up to 95%.
Toyota currently collects approximately 25,000 used automotive batteries annually, mostly nickel-metal hydride batteries found in its hybrid electric vehicles, and expects this number to rise with the increase in sales of battery electric vehicles.
Through the agreement with Cirba Solutions, Toyota anticipates reducing its overall transportation and logistics costs by at least 70% by reducing the average miles driven for collection and recycling.
