Tourist Killed by Elephant While Protecting Grandchildren at Kruger National Park

A 59-year-old South African man was trampled to death after intervening as an elephant charged his grandchildren near Malelane Gate.

  • Shaik Adam Shabir Ammed, a 59-year-old South African, died Saturday in Kruger National Park while attempting to shield his grandchildren from a charging elephant.
  • The incident occurred near the Crocodile River at Malelane Gate, a popular entry point to the park, where visitors are prohibited from exiting their vehicles except in designated areas.
  • Eyewitnesses reported that the children, aged 5 and 11, ran into the bush to take photos, provoking the elephant to charge; Ammed intervened but was fatally trampled.
  • The 11-year-old sustained leg injuries while the 5-year-old was unharmed; the elephant responsible could not be identified as it retreated into the herd.
  • Kruger National Park officials and police are investigating the incident and have urged the public not to share images or speculate about the event online.
