Tourist Found Dead in Gondola at France’s Val Cenis Ski Resort

Resort staff report a suspected cardiac arrest following a solo gondola ride.

Overview

  • The 53-year-old was discovered by the gondola operator when the cabin reached the summit on January 6.
  • Two ski patrollers attempted resuscitation with a defibrillator before emergency services and local police pronounced him dead at the scene.
  • On the same day at nearby Les Menuires, a Spanish skier was found unconscious against a rock in an unmarked off-piste area.
  • Two weeks earlier in Macugnaga, Italy, a cable car hit a station barrier, injuring six and leaving about 100 people stranded as slopes closed and the lift was halted.
  • The National Alpine Rescue Corps evacuated those stranded by helicopter, and in a separate December 28 case in Japan a five-year-old died after being trapped in a ski escalator.
