Tour de France Chief Signals Openness to Dresden’s 2030 Grand Départ Bid

Late-September meetings in Dresden mark the next step toward a potential 2030 bid.

Overview

  • Tour director Christian Prudhomme said a German start in 2030 “cannot be dismissed,” with France’s ambassador endorsing Dresden and noting the 40th anniversary of reunification.
  • Dresden is the proposed launch point for an eastern Germany opening, with concepts for stages from Dresden to Gera, a LeipzigHalle time trial, and Erfurt to Magdeburg.
  • Dresden’s sports mayor Jan Donhauser will meet the initiators in late September, with further discussions planned with A.S.O. on bid conditions and next steps.
  • The push is led by the Grand Départ Allemagne initiative, backed by letters of intent from Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, with costs estimated at about €20 million largely from private sponsors.
  • Competition remains strong, with interest reported from Norway, Czechia, Slovenia, the Netherlands and Belgium, as A.S.O. reviews roughly 300 candidatures each year, about 50 from abroad.
