Total War: Warhammer 40,000 Will Launch as a Single, Expandable Sandbox

Creative Assembly plans a 2027 release with a roadmap of major updates alongside smaller releases to expand the game over time.

Overview

  • At Gamescom 2026 Creative Assembly said it will treat Total War: Warhammer 40,000 as one core game to be continuously expanded rather than split into a trilogy of sequels.
  • The studio confirmed a 2027 release window and said the game will launch with four customizable factions: Space Marines, Astra Militarum, Aeldari and Ork.
  • Hands-on demos at Gamescom showed allied non-player Imperium forces on the battlefield and developers described a reputation system that will force Space Marines to manage relations with planetary forces and governors to avoid appearing heretical.
  • Creative Assembly has teased post-launch content plans that include additional Space Marine chapters such as the Space Wolves and possible xenos or Chaos additions like Genestealer cults and Chaos Space Marines.
  • The plan echoes the studio’s earlier Immortal Empires sandbox model and means players will see new chapters, factions and balance changes added to a single persistent game instead of buying separate sequels.
