Total Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024 to Offer Longer Totality and More Spectacular View than 2017

Cities across North America prepare for the celestial event, with the path of totality passing over major population centers.

  • The total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, will be visible in parts of Mexico, the U.S., and Canada, with all of North America witnessing at least a partial solar eclipse.
  • The path of totality, where the sun is completely blocked by the moon, is wider than in 2017 and passes over more populated areas, including Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Buffalo, and Montreal.
  • The moment of totality will last longer in 2024 than it did in 2017, with all viewing locations south of Indiana experiencing at least four minutes of totality, including nearly four-and-a-half minutes for spots in Mexico.
  • The sun is more active now than it was in 2017, nearing the peak of its 11-year cycle of sunspot and solar flare activity, which means more features like streamers, arching prominences, and perhaps even a coronal mass ejection may be visible during totality.
  • Various cities across the U.S. are planning festivities and events to celebrate the eclipse, with many starting the weekend before the Monday eclipse.
