Total Lunar Eclipse Turns Tonight’s Rising Moon Red Over Germany

Because the Moon rises already in totality, low eastern visibility will decide who sees it.

Overview

  • Totality runs roughly from 19:30 to 20:52/20:53 MESZ, with maximum darkening near 20:11, after moonrise in Berlin (19:37), Munich (19:40), Hamburg (19:52) and Cologne (20:01).
  • Observers in Germany will mainly see the second half of the event, and the eclipsed Moon may remain hard to spot for 20–30 minutes after rise because it is low and very dark.
  • The red coloration occurs as Earth’s atmosphere bends mostly long‑wavelength light into the umbra, producing a coppery “Blood Moon.”
  • Viewing is safe without special equipment; a clear, unobstructed view toward the eastern horizon improves chances, and many planetariums and observatories are hosting public sessions.
  • Forecasts from the Deutscher Wetterdienst call for mostly clear skies with some high clouds, though thicker cloud cover may develop overnight in parts of the west and southwest.
