Total Lunar Eclipse on Sept. 7 to Be Visible Across Most of Spain

Totality will last about 82–83 minutes, with the full phase missed only in western Galicia and the Canary Islands.

Overview

  • Official timings for peninsular Spain: partial phase from 18:27 to 21:56, totality from 19:31 to 20:53, and maximum around 20:11–20:12, according to the IGN.
  • In most of the peninsula, the Balearic Islands, Ceuta and Melilla, the Moon will rise already eclipsed, while western Galicia and the Canary Islands will see only the closing partial phase.
  • The total phase is confirmed visible across large parts of Europe and Africa as well as Asia, Oceania and Antarctica.
  • The Moon’s red hue during totality is caused by Earth’s atmosphere filtering sunlight; the event is safe to watch unaided, though dark, unobstructed horizons improve the view.
  • Local groups are organizing public observations, including an AAM event at Puig de Santa Magdalena in Mallorca, and a related partial solar eclipse follows on September 21.
