Toshima Village Approves Return of Tokara Islanders After Five-Day Seismic Pause

Evacuated islanders will be invited to return starting July 25 after five consecutive days without intensity-4 tremors.

  • On July 10, Toshima Village set its repatriation benchmark at five straight days without any intensity-4 or stronger tremors on Akusekijima and Kodakarajima.
  • The Fukuoka District Meteorological Observatory recorded more than 2,205 quakes since June 21, including a magnitude-6 lower event on July 3 and several intensity-5 shocks.
  • Between July 4 and July 16, 52 residents of Akusekijima and 15 from Kodakarajima voluntarily relocated to hotels or relatives’ homes on the mainland.
  • Some evacuees began returning independently from July 17 ahead of the formal ferry repatriation plan.
  • Thirty-nine islanders remain displaced and authorities are finalizing individual return arrangements as tremor monitoring continues.
