Earlier in the game, Jake McCabe of the Maple Leafs was injured in a fight with Hathaway after McCabe confronted him for colliding with Leafs' goalie Dennis Hildeby.
McCabe suffered an upper-body injury during the fight and did not return to the game; his status remains unclear.
The fine represents the maximum penalty allowed under the NHL's collective bargaining agreement and will go to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
