Toronto Skier Dies After Deep-Snow Fall at Sunshine Village

Officials have sent her body to Calgary for an autopsy to confirm the cause.

Overview

  • Family identified the victim as 47-year-old Farah Merchant of Toronto following the Saturday incident near Banff.
  • Resort officials say she fell off the side of the green-level Banff Avenue run into a pocket of loose, deep snow known as a deep-snow immersion.
  • Ski patrol reached her in about three minutes and performed CPR and emergency care for more than two hours, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • A STARS air ambulance team responded and prepared to airlift her, but stood down after she was declared deceased.
  • Alberta RCMP say the death is not considered suspicious, as Sunshine Village reports one of its snowiest seasons on record, increasing deep-snow hazards.
