Toronto Council Approves 150-Metre Watercraft Ban at Woodbine Beach

The measure takes effect in June 2026 following a summer safety pilot at Hanlan’s Point Beach

Overview

  • Councillors voted this week to bar jet skis and other motorized watercraft from operating within 150 metres of the Woodbine Beach shoreline starting June 2026
  • Project S.A.R., the Toronto Police Service Marine Unit’s recent enforcement blitz, resulted in over 50 tickets, more than $17,000 in fines, 49 vessel inspections and multiple tows
  • The 200-metre pilot exclusion zone at Hanlan’s Point Beach remains in place as city staff assess its impact on swimmer safety and nuisance complaints
  • Friends of Humber Bay Park and the Humber Bay Shores Condominium Association are campaigning for a similar exclusion zone after multiple jet ski accidents and reports of reckless operation
  • The approved motion also requests new waterfront signage, a public watercraft safety campaign and further study of exclusion zones at Humber Bay Park and other areas
