Toronto Boy, 12, Charged in Markham Shooting Freed on Bail as Police Seek More Suspects

Calls for bail reform mount after the 12-year-old’s release in the Markham case.

Overview

  • York Regional Police arrested the Toronto youth on Sept. 2 and charged him with attempted murder, discharging a firearm with intent, unauthorized firearm possession, possession of property obtained by crime, and two counts of failing to comply with a release order.
  • The Aug. 14 daylight shooting near McCowan Road and 14th Avenue left a man in his early 30s with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, police said.
  • Police confirm the accused was already under release orders for unrelated violent offences at the time of the incident and that he was released on bail again after a court appearance this week.
  • Investigators say the probe continues as they search for at least one additional suspect and examine motive, and they are asking the public for tips and any relevant video.
  • The victim’s family and York Regional Police Chief Jim MacSween are pressing for bail-law changes, and Premier Doug Ford and Prime Minister Mark Carney discussed the issue as the federal government plans to introduce bail reform legislation next month.
