Tornado Tears Roofs From Homes in Eferding, Upper Austria

Three thunderstorm cells discharged over the town and produced a rare, narrowly focused tornado that caused concentrated roof and power-line damage.

Overview

  • A powerful, localized wind event struck Eferding on Monday evening and ripped off roofs, hurled debris into neighboring houses, and damaged a house power line.
  • The volunteer fire brigade from Freiwillige Feuerwehr Eferding and the local network operator responded for about three hours to clear wreckage and make the damaged power line safe by switching it off and removing it.
  • Meteorologists say three storm cells moving from the west discharged over Eferding and produced the tornado pattern identified by GeoSphere Austria as very strong wind causing large damage in a narrow area.
  • Separate storm damage was reported across nearby districts and in parts of Italy, including a chapel fire in Herzogsdorf and a Dolomites incident where a church roof landed on a power line.
  • Experts stress tornadoes are rare in Austria and note the event caused significant local property damage without destroying whole villages or lifting heavy vehicles, with recent regional data for comparison coming from the Deutscher Wetterdienst's 2025 tornado counts in Germany.
