Top-Ranked QB John Mateer Transfers to Oklahoma

The Washington State standout reunites with former offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle after a record-breaking season.

John Mateer, the top-ranked player in the transfer portal, announced his commitment to Oklahoma after entering the portal on December 16.
Mateer will reunite with Ben Arbuckle, his former offensive coordinator at Washington State, and John Kuceyeski, his former quarterbacks coach, both of whom recently joined Oklahoma's staff.
The dual-threat quarterback led the FBS in total touchdowns (44) during the 2024 season, amassing 3,139 passing yards, 29 passing touchdowns, 826 rushing yards, and 15 rushing touchdowns in 12 games.
Oklahoma secured Mateer's commitment over strong interest from Miami and North Carolina, with former Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield reportedly playing a key role in recruiting him.
Mateer's arrival provides a much-needed boost for Oklahoma, which struggled offensively in its first SEC season, finishing 6-6 and ranking 94th nationally in scoring offense.
