Top Indian Wrestlers Protest Election of New Wrestling Federation Chief

Sakshi Malik quits sport, Bajrang Punia returns award in protest against election of Sanjay Singh, associate of former chief accused of sexual harassment

  • Sakshi Malik, India's top female wrestler, has quit the sport in protest over the election of Sanjay Singh as the new president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). Singh is a close associate of the federation's former chief, Brij Bhushan Singh, who is accused of sexually harassing female wrestlers.
  • Male wrestler and fellow Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia has returned one of India's highest civilian awards in protest against the election.
  • The Wrestling Federation of India was suspended by the United World Wrestling (UWW) in August after failing to hold its election on time due to the sexual harassment scandal.
  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had condemned the way the wrestlers were treated and called for an impartial inquiry into their complaints.
  • Despite the protests and allegations, Sanjay Singh was elected as the new president of the WFI with a majority of 40 votes to 7.
