Top Defensive Recruit L.J. McCray Commits to University of Florida Football Program

Star defensive lineman's commitment strengthens Florida Gators' third-ranked 2024 class, giving boost to edge-rushing department.

  • Top-25 recruit L.J. McCray, a four-star defensive end, has committed to the University of Florida, bolstering the Gators' third-ranked 2024 class. He had considered offers from Georgia, Florida State, Miami and Auburn.
  • McCray's commitment solidifies Florida's edge-rushing department, adding to two other top-100 prospects. McCray is the sixth-best defensive end in his cycle, rocketing up from No. 293 overall to No. 23 in ESPN's most recent ranking update.
  • McCray, along with Jamonta Waller (No. 18 overall) and Amaris Williams (No. 99 overall), give the Gators' defensive end line up considerable strength. If all commit, this will be the second straight class under Coach Billy Napier with three ESPN 300 defensive ends.
  • In six games this season for Mainland High School, Florida, McCray recorded 36 tackles (24 solo), including 15 tackles for loss and seven sacks. His commitment keeps Florida ahead of rival recruitment by Florida State and Miami.
  • The 6'7", 265-pound defensive lineman may need a year or two for development but is considered a top prospect for his enormous potential. The Florida Gators' 2024 class now has 14 ESPN 300 prospects, equalling the total signed in 2023.
