Tony Romo and CBS Mutually Part Ways

The split leaves J.J. Watt in CBS’s lead NFL booth while the network keeps any financial settlement private.

Overview

  • CBS announced Friday that it and Tony Romo have mutually agreed to end their nine-year broadcasting partnership and thanked him for his work with the network.
  • Romo was placed on indefinite leave after a July 23 traffic stop in Milwaukee led to his arrest on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and the release of body-camera footage showing poor performance on field sobriety tests.
  • He pleaded no contest in Wisconsin court on Sept. 1 and received a six-month driver’s license suspension, a court fine and orders for an ignition-interlock device and an alcohol assessment program.
  • Romo said his career-ending back surgeries led to a dependence on pain medication and an over-reliance on alcohol, and he released a statement saying he will take time off to focus on his health and family.
  • CBS will keep J.J. Watt alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson for the rest of the season, and reporting notes Romo had roughly $72 million left on his contract though the network has not disclosed how the parties resolved the remaining pay.
