Overview
- On August 7, U.S. District Judge Stephen R. Clark sentenced Haddix to 46 months in federal prison and three years of supervised release after she pleaded guilty to perjury and obstruction charges.
- Haddix admitted filing multiple false declarations claiming Tonka died and was cremated to circumvent a 2016 PETA lawsuit and court orders mandating the chimps’ transfer.
- In June 2022, U.S. Marshals rescued Tonka from a cage in Haddix’s basement and transferred him to the Save the Chimps sanctuary in Florida.
- Two weeks after her March guilty plea, Haddix violated pretrial release conditions by hiding another chimp in her basement, prompting her pretrial detention.
- PETA is advocating for the Captive Primate Safety Act to establish stricter federal controls on private primate ownership.
