Tonda Eckert Given Six-Week Suspended Ban by FA Over Spygate

The FA suspended the ban to let Eckert stay as Southampton manager while imposing a fine and a reprimand as a deterrent against further training surveillance.

Overview

  • Southampton admitted that staff filmed opponents’ training in 2025–26 and an EFL independent panel expelled the club from the Championship play-offs and docked four points for the 2026/27 season.
  • The spying first became public after a junior analyst was spotted filming Middlesbrough’s session in May 2026 and leaked messages later suggested pressure from senior staff to carry out observations.
  • The FA charged Eckert with three breaches in July and, after an independent regulatory hearing, on Wednesday imposed a six-week suspension from all football that is suspended until the end of the 2027/28 season plus a £28,000 fine and a formal reprimand.
  • Eckert admitted the charges and remains in post; the suspended ban will be activated if he requests, authorises, takes, or uses information from any observation of another club’s training before the suspension expires.
  • The case has left tangible costs for Southampton—including the lost promotion opportunity estimated in reporting at roughly £200m—and raised questions about senior accountability, the treatment of junior staff and consistency between EFL and FA sanctions.
