Tom Hughes, KC, passed away on November 28, 2024, two days after celebrating his 101st birthday.
Hughes served as Australia’s 19th attorney-general from 1969 to 1971 and was a Liberal MP for eight years.
Renowned for his legal career, Hughes appeared in 91 High Court cases and represented high-profile clients in defamation and constitutional law.
A decorated World War II pilot, he was awarded France’s Legion of Honour for his wartime service.
Hughes is remembered as a towering figure in Australian law and politics, survived by his wife Christine and three children, including Lucy Turnbull, former Sydney lord mayor and wife of ex-prime minister Malcolm Turnbull.
