Overview

  • On June 5, Guinness World Records certified Tom Cruise for completing 16 burning parachute jumps during filming of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
  • The stunt required leaping from a helicopter at over 7,500 feet with a parachute soaked in aviation fuel and ignited midair, after which Cruise cut away the burning canopy and deployed a backup chute.
  • Filmed in South Africa’s Drakensberg mountains, the sequence demanded weeks of preparation and sometimes featured Cruise carrying a 50-pound camera rig to capture close-up freefall footage.
  • Guinness editor-in-chief Craig Glenday praised Cruise’s “utter fearlessness” and “absolute focus on authenticity” in awarding him the record.
  • Since its May 23 release, the film has grossed more than $360 million worldwide and opened to a franchise-high $200 million weekend box office.
