Toll Motorway Deaths Hit Record Low in France in 2024, Industry Report Finds

The decline on operator-run routes contrasts with a small increase in overall road fatalities.

  • On tolled motorways, 114 fatal crashes caused 129 deaths in 2024, down from 164 crashes and 182 deaths in 2023, while nationwide road deaths reached 3,432 and fatalities across all motorways fell to 239, an 11% drop.
  • Alcohol, drugs and medication were cited in 35% of fatal motorway accidents, with younger drivers under 35 disproportionately involved.
  • Excessive speed and the presence of pedestrians each accounted for about 20% of fatal cases, often when people exited stopped vehicles on the roadway.
  • Fatigue-related crashes rose to 19% from 13% a year earlier, with incidents concentrated overnight between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. and occurring more frequently on weekends.
  • Inattention linked to devices was blamed for 14% of deaths, peaking during afternoon commute hours, and the sector reported two on‑duty worker deaths along with 143 incidents injuring or killing 15 motorway staff.
