Tokyu Den-en-toshi Trains Collide Near Kajigaya, No Injuries as Service Curtailed

Officials say a trainee halted short after a safety alert, leaving a train blocking the path of an oncoming service.

Overview

  • A Shibuya-bound Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line train with 149 passengers collided with an out-of-service train near Kajigaya Station in Kawasaki around 11 p.m. Sunday.
  • A portion of the out-of-service train derailed in the collision, and both trains remained at the site as of Monday afternoon.
  • Service is suspended between Saginuma and Shibuya on the Den-en-toshi Line, with only Saginuma–Chuo-rinkan operating at about 40% of normal frequency.
  • The parallel Oimachi Line is running only between Oimachi and Futako-tamagawa at roughly 30% of usual levels, and the operator says full restoration is expected to take time.
  • The transport ministry said the trainee stopped before the designated position after an overspeed-prevention signal, leaving the train protruding, and the Japan Transport Safety Board assigned two investigators.
